Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
