The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
