Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
